History of Pilates

Pilates is a system of exercise focused on improving flexibility, strength and awareness of the body. It consists of controlled movements carried out on mats or machines. Pilates increases resistance in the body.

History of Pilates goes back to 20th Century when it was created by Joseph Pilates, a physical trainer in 1920s. Joseph Pilates was born in Germany and was very frail as a child. To strengthen his body, he took up several sports and became an athlete. He designed exercise methods and equipments for immobilised soldiers as a nurse in the Second World War. He also developed a series of mat exercises to strengthen their body. The main purpose of developing pilates was the rehabilitation of soldiers of the second world war. It was also used for the conditioning of bodies of dancers. However, since the History of pilates it is used as a popular method of exercising all over the world.

Joseph Pilates also created the principles of pilates which are listed below:

1. Breathing- Joseph Pilates believed that circulation of blood was important for the cells of the body and for proper blood circulation, breathing was necessary. Proper inhalation and exhalation are important for Pilates exercises.
2. Centering- The large group of muscles in the center of the body were called the powerhouse by Pilates. Pilates exercises begin from the powerhouse and then flow outwards.
3. Concentration- Pilates exercises require proper focus and careful attention to the body muscles and movement.
4. Control- For effective results, Pilates exercises are practiced with control. Pilates exercises basically consist of controlled movements of the muscles.
5. Precision- Pilates exercises must be practiced with precise and perfect movements for positive results.
6. Flow or efficiency of movements- Movements in Pilates exercises must be kept continuous to build strength and stamina.
7. Flexibility- Pilates exercises are carried out for improved flexibility of muscles and the body.
8. Mind over matter- The basic aim of Pilates exercises is to build a fusion between the mind and the body.

Pilates exercises are recommended to build strength, improve resistance, develop proper alignment and posture, to develop core muscles and to increase the flexibility of the body. Pilates is a highly valuable and beneficial form of exercising.
